The future of fish farming

( NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT – Demand for seafood is skyrocketing and will continue to rise throughout this century. The only way to meet it will be through aquaculture. Yet, while next-generation aquaculture will be far more ecologically responsible than its predecessors, it will also use far more energy. If that additional energy is not clean and cheap, new aquaculture technologies cannot serve our broader environmental and climate goals.

The rise in demand for seafood is a good thing, to a point. Fish are more efficient than pork and beef, because they require fewer inputs to yield the same amount of protein. So, as global meat consumption continues to rise, it makes sense for a sizable share of it to come from the sea.

What is aquaculture

According to, Aquaculture is the farming of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic plants, algae, and other aquatic organisms. Aquaculture involves cultivating freshwater and saltwater populations under controlled conditions, and can be contrasted with commercial fishing, which is the harvesting of wild fish. It is less commonly spelled aquiculture, and is also known as aquafarming. Mariculture refers to aquaculture practiced in marine environments and in underwater habitats.

Aquaculture experts want increased Tilapia production to boost export

( IN a bid to boost fish export, fish farmers in the country were on Friday in Lagos urged to scale up Tilapia farming. Aquaculture experts told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that mass production of Tilapia would help to meet the ever-increasing demands for Tilapia in Europe and the U.S.

A consultant and manager of Premium Aquaculture, Mr Raju Govin, an Indian, said the demand for Tilapia globally was on the increase, stressing the need to boost local production. “Tilapia is an African fish but is being cultured worldwide.

“Currently, the U.S. is the major consumer of Tilapia and the demand for it is ever increasing,” he told NAN. Govin said there was the need to step up awareness on the export potential of Tilapia, though catfish remains a staple in Nigeria…….

Panama will promote mass production of tilapia fish to meet national demand

( Producers from the central province of Coclé and government agencies are developing a mass production plan for tilapia fish focused on meeting the national demand that this product has had in recent years, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MIDA) informed on Saturday.

With the advice of MIDA, the Water Resources Authority of Panama and a company specializing in the cultivation of tilapia fingerlings will promote a project in all the provinces of the country to offer it to lagging or subsistence producers, and improve their product to market it, detailed a press release.

The Aquaculture Panama Company dedicated to genetic improvement, advice and production of fish, was the first in the province of Coclé that performs actions for the mass rearing of that fish………

Seed porters backbone of aquaculture

Aqua seed porters seen in every nook and corner of coastal belt between Godavari and Guntur districts, became a backbone of the flourishing aquaculture in the State. The seed porters play a pivotal role in bringing the seed, mostly Vannamei species, from the hatchery or seed pond to the pond prepared for cultivation. Packed in the Styrofoam boxes, the seed porters carry the live seed on the two-wheelers and each porter covers a maximum of up to 40 kilometres a day………
